Hollywood film makers have always tried to stretch their creativity and come out with interesting scripts and ideas that have received a lot of appreciation and applause from the world audience. Of course, they invest a lot of time, hard work, dedication and money to transform their ideas into reality and to show us their vision of movies on the celluloid screen. Let’s find out about some of the highest grossing films in Hollywood.

Avatar

Avatar is a 2009 American epic science fiction film which is written and directed by James Cameron. The movie has one of the best visual effects till date and therefore a lot of money and time was invested in order to come up with the kind of cameras and technology that would make this movie worth watching. The movie is set in the year 2154 where humans are already on another planet called Pandora but they are not able to penetrate deeper into the planet because of the powerful local tribe known as Na’vi. It took more than ten years for the director James Cameron to develop the story and the technology that would be used in the filming of Avatar. The movie has broken the records of Titanic to become the first film to gross more than $2 billion.

Titanic

The second spot for the highest grossing movie of all time goes to a disaster romantic movie Titanic which is again written and directed by James Cameron. The movie was released in 1997 and had some of the best visual effects at that point in time. The movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet who became overnight stars because of the overwhelming response that the movie received. The movie holds the second spot after Avatar as it was able to gross around $1.8 billion worldwide and apart from that the movie also won 11 Academy Awards including the Best Picture.

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

This fantasy adventure movie sneaks into the list and stays on the third position grossing around $1.1 billion worldwide. The movie is directed by Peter Jackson and this movie concludes the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The movie was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and it won all Academy Awards making it the only movie that won all the awards in which it was nominated. The movie is also the fifth most successful movie in North America adjusting the inflation. The story is about the final stages of Sauron’s conquest of Middle Earth. The movie took a lot of time in post production because there were more than 1400 visual effects scenes that had to be created and edited to get the perfect script.

Things You Should Know About Movie Piracy

Posted on : 12-03-2010 | By : admin | In : Film

With the swift advancement of technology, most of the business fields are frequently threatened by an evil called piracy. Piracy is rampant in many creative and technology based industries. Here we will be discussing the movie industry, which is very badly hit by piracy.

Movie piracy has become a rampant and flourishing business for a large number of people. And even the general masses accept the evil as it is helping them to save a lot of money. The easy availability and pocket friendly street price tags have made the music piracy and movie piracy industry a million dollar industry throughout the world.

The movie piracy industry has become so widespread that it is causing great loss for the film producers and as well as the distributors who invest a huge sum of money for the making of each film. Movie piracy alone has cost the United States economy $20.5 billion per year in loss of business, jobs, wages and taxes, according to a recent market study.

The film industry for years has fought a war against movie piracy. The scenario has reached such an alarming stage that illegal copies of new films are easily available through street DVD sales or Internet download within days, or in some cases, before a movie’s hall release. The recent study also shows that a growing number of illegal sites are offering new movies for a free download. Though the authenticity of these downloadable movies is surely questionable, the movie buffs and those who want free entertainment are profusely downloading these movies from such illegal sites.

Many organizations all around the world had tried different ways to tackle movie piracy but nothing effective could be done till now. In the United States of America the organization named Motion Picture Association of America warned against a growing global epidemic of movie piracy. The organization also conducted a study on the Internet where it showed that nearly one fourth of the Internet users have illegally downloaded movies from the Internet.

It is quite an astonishing and disturbing fact that most of the people who buy pirated DVDs or CDs or download pirated movies from the Internet do not know that they are committing a crime or an offence. They are also unaware of the fact that they are the cause for the loss of jobs to a lot of people.

The study was conducted by an organization that queried three thousand and six hundred Internet users in eight countries about online movie piracy. The study was performed in France, Germany, Australia, Italy, Korea, Japan, the U.K., and the USA. The survey showed that online movie piracy is growing too fast and most of the users are not even aware of the offence.

The increasing simplicity of downloading movies through a fast and efficient broadband connection, and the invention of compression technologies and extensive availability of new releases as well as the old classics online, are some of the main factors which attract consumers to download without giving it a second thought. The very high movie ticket prices also tempt people to buy pirated DVDs from the street shops.

Facts About The Movie Ratings System

0

Posted on : 04-03-2010 | By : admin | In : Film

If you are a movie fan, you know that movies are rated before they are released to the public, in order to better inform viewers of the content of the film.

Movies were not always rated, however, which meant that their content was universally restricted in order to make it appropriate for all audiences. This also meant that the subject matter that could be dealt with within the context of a film was very restricted, and that directors had to find ways to deal with objectionable subject matter in creative, non objectionable ways.

Movies that are released today receive a rating from the Motion Picture Association of America, based on a system of criteria adopted in 1968. Before this time, there were no G, PG, PG13, R or other ratings designations in place.

A Universal code of screen content, the Hays code, adopted in 1930, stated, among other things that movies were not to portray drug trafficking, excessive kissing or seduction. The code, put into place because of the rapid transition at the time from silent films to longer movies involving dialogue and more involved plot lines, also forbade the glorification of murder, adultery, and childbirth.

This code remained in effect until the 1960s, when changing societal attitudes necessitated the move to a rating system that allowed certain things that had been previously forbidden, but restricted who could watch them, namely children. Although the Hays code was just that, a code, very few filmmakers took the chance of producing movies that violated the codes standards, since this would have doomed their films to obscurity.

The original movie ratings system developed in 1968 included G, M, R, and X for general, mature, restricted, and no one under 17 admitted, respectively. PG replaced M in 1970, and the R rating was modified to restrict admission to persons under 17 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. In 1984, director

Steven Spielberg requested that the PG 13 rating be added, after parents of preteens raised concerns that some of his films, like Gremlins and Indiana Jones, were too scary to be rated PG.

In 1990, the ratings system was modified again, and the X rating was changed to NC 17 to indicate a movie that was non pornographic but still unsuitable for persons under 17. When people go to the movies nowadays, they use these ratings guidelines as a way to know what to expect when it comes to making the best entertainment choices possible.

The Characteristics of Various Movie Genres

Posted on : 24-02-2010 | By : admin | In : Film

The first movies were nothing more than silent, short reels of film, usually depicting ordinary people performing everyday tasks. It was not long, however, before filmmakers began experimenting with elements of plot and characterization, and soon, themed movies were being made.

While many genres and sub genres exist, there are a few basic, or main movie genres that most films fall into. These include, but are not limited to, action, adventure, comedy, crime or gangster films, epics or historical films, dramas, horror, musicals, science fiction, war films, and westerns.

Westerns are considered to be the defining American film genre, and were among some of the first popular types of movies. Westerns are defined by classic plot elements such as horses, small towns, cowboys, Indians, outlaws, bank robberies, etc. Westerns have fallen in and out of popularity over the decades and have been redefined and modified as well, but the basic premises and plots have remained the same.

Comedies, like westerns were among the first types of films to gain popularity with movie audiences. Early vaudeville stage acts, and the slapstick comedy styles popularized in silent films paved the way for lighthearted, amusing, plots exaggerating situations, relationships, characters. Over time, comedic subgenres, including romantic comedies, black comedies, spoofs, and others, were developed.

Physical stunts, rescues, battles, natural disasters, destruction, and fast-paced plots characterize action movies. Characters in these films are often two dimensional heroes or villains. These types of movies are sometimes sub categorized into disaster film, martial arts film, and other specialized distinctions.

Adventure films contain elements of both the action and the fantasy movie genres, and are often set in exotic locations. The plots of these types of films frequently revolve around searches for lost treasures or for the unknown, and the genre encompasses pirate or swashbuckling films and some historical epics.

Crime films, including the popular gangster film subcategory, revolve around the actions of criminals, the most popular being bank robbers, thieves and murderers. The film noir sub genre comes under this category, as does the serial killer film classification.

Movie genre categories may be broad, but sub categorical distinctions can become very specific. The more that one knows about the different movie genres, the easier it becomes to identify different plot elements, settings, and characterization traits of favorite films.

Movie audiences expect different things from comedies than they do from adventure movies, westerns, or horror movies, and for good reason. Learning more about genre classifications can help make the experience of watching your favorite films even better.

Movie Miss Takes That We Missed

I purposely made a mistake while writing the title of this article because we are going to talk all about mistakes and therefore there is nothing wrong in making a mistake while writing a word mistake for an article that is all about mistakes, right? Well, Hollywood have been entertaining us for more than a century now and we have come across movies that we consider flawless and therefore they have been critically acclaimed and won many awards as well, but there are some scenes where the actors or the directors have goofed up but the error is never rectified probably because the error is too minor and the film makers think that people will never notice such minor mistakes.

Recently I saw Avatar with my friends in 3D and it was an awesome experience, but directors should understand that when you are making a film in 3D you have to take care of the smallest details because 3D will display the errors more clearly. In one of the scenes where they are dropping the mobile lab at the Tree of Life, we see Grace smoking a cigarette which is almost half way through, but the scenes changes and in few seconds the camera is again focused on Grace and we see that the cigarette is a bit longer which means that it was just lit, or probably the cigarette was bought from some stall in Pandora that works the other way around.

Another movie that made history in recent times is Paranormal Activity which had a similar presentation style like The Blair Witch Project. However, towards the end we see that Katie goes down in the darkness and starts screaming. Micah hears the scream and rushes down. At this point the alarm light is off. We hear a lot of noises that indicates struggle and than we see Katie coming back into the room with blood on her shirt and when she walks in the alarm light is on. Probably this could be because ghosts have awesome powers to make impossible possible.

Since we are talking about Hollywood movies we cannot forget 2012 by Roland Emmerich where we see the futuristic destruction of our world. In one of the scenes which comes towards the end of the movie where the giant tsunami is already heading towards the monstrous size ship and the camera focuses on the countdown timer and shows 14:40 and than it clicks down to 14:39. The scenes changes and we see a huge tidal wave approaching faster and the next scene again shows the countdown timer which shows 14:41. Oops, I think Roland Emmerich just decided to give actors a grace period of 2 to 5 seconds so that they can get their shots ready for the climax.

Do you love cars? If yes, than I am sure you must have watched the latest installment of Fast and Furious. In one of the scenes where we see all the cars heading into a deep tunnel where they take a lot of turns and drive further deep, but amazingly Giselle is still able to communicate with others over the GPS radio. I really wonder if GPS system can penetrate so deep inside the tunnel.

Guidelines For Writing Movie Reviews

0

Posted on : 15-01-2010 | By : admin | In : Film

A movie review gives indication as to whether or not others will find the movie worth watching. The purpose of most movie reviews is to help the reader in determining whether they want to watch, rent or buy the movie. The review should also give enough details about the movie so that the reader can make an up-to-date decision as to whether to watch the movie or not. At the same time, the review should not give away too much of the essential plot of the story.

In this article we will be discussing the guidelines that should be followed while writing a movie review. Before starting to write a review, the writer should remember the following procedure:

- Selecting the movie

- Knowing the context of the movie, such as it’s director, actors, story and many more

- Formulating the writers opinion in one sentence

- Selecting special scenes from the movie or other facts that will support the writer’s opinion.

The first step in writing the review is to watch the movie. Most movie reviewers take notes as they watch the movie. Watching the movie a second time helps to absorb a lot more detail about the movie. Most movie reviewers give their personal opinion of the movie in their review. In all good journalism, the reviewer should always give impartial details, and allow the reader to make their own opinion as well.

Reviewer’s opinions should be explained to allow the reader to determine whether the readers would agree or not. The reviewer also needs to consider the audience. Writing a movie review for children requires a different approach than if writing for a general movie audience. The review should always be written keeping the targeted audience in mind. The main essence of the movie should be retained in an outlined sketch — but it should always be remembered not to give away any essential details like surprises or a sudden turn in the plot.

Details of actors, crew members, directors should be mentioned in the review. It should also be mentioned how well they have acted and how well the movie has been made technically. The technicalities are an important part of the movie review. Technicalities include art direction, music, editing lighting, cinematography and many more.

Movie reviews even include a little bit of criticism if needed. Criticism says what could have been done to make the film better or what the weak points of the movie are. Though critical analysis is not always needed, a word or two can serve the purpose in a movie review.

Conclusion

A reviewer must always remember to give an outline of the whole story, but not give away details which hold surprises or the special essence of the film. It should be kept untold for the audience to watch the film. The movie review should be written keeping a note of the types of readers who would be reading the review. The language, presentation and technicalities of writing would also depend on the types of readers. The medium which the review will be published is also important, because if the review is published on the net, the reviewer will get mostly youth readers. However, if it is going to be published in a local language in a local daily newspaper, then the approach should be different.
