Posted on : 05-09-2010 | By : admin | In : Health

The human cases of swine flu, which is spread by influenza virus A (H1N1), have been reported from Mexico and the US, where many people have fallen ill and even died from it. The health agencies are working closely and the World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that some of the human cases are a never seen before version of this virus.

There are several methods of preventing flu, although in the case of swine flu, people should resort to effective anti-viral drugs like Tamiflu and Relenza for preventative reasons.

What is Swine flu?
Swine flu is a respiratory disease, which is caused by influenza type A virus (H1N1) that infects pigs. The symptoms of swine flu are similar to that of seasonal flu, although there have been several reported human deaths that are linked to swine flu. It is considered as new version of H1N1 strain, which caused the 1918 flu pandemic.

How to treat Swine flu?
There is no specific vaccine for controlling this type of flu, but some current drugs can prove helpful. Apart from anti-viral drugs, people can do a bit on their part. They should maintain a good personal hygiene such as washing hands, and covering their nose while sneezing.

Doctors have recommended some anti-viral treatments like Tamiflu or Relenza, depending upon the suitability of a patient. These two drugs are commonly used for the treatment of influenza type A, and considering swine flu is a strain of influenza type A, it has been reported to treat it.. The US health authorities have discovered that not only can these drugs help in swine flu treatment, but can also help in preventing it spreading. These drugs ensure that the flu virus is not transmitted easily among people.

Tamiflu is an oral prescription drug that is used for the treatment as well as prevention of flu. The main ingredient in it is oseltamivir phosphate, which can prevent the spread of flu virus in the body. It also helps to ease off the flu symptoms. Tamiflu is available in the strength of a 75 mg capsule.

Similar to Tamiflu is another flu treatment known as Relenza, which is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. It can help treat type A or B influenza, including swine flu. It comes in the form of a powder, which is inhaled at least two times in a day or as directed by the doctor.

Both these anti-viral drugs can prove helpful in the treatment of swine flu. You can get them from any local pharmacy by showing a prescription from a doctor, or you can buy them over the internet from any authentic online source.

What to do in order to stay safe during Swine flu?
It is advisable for those people who come into contact with the swine virus and have flu like symptoms to seek proper medical advice. Most affected cases have been reported from Mexico, so it has been advised to cancel any travel trips in and out of that country for the time being.

You should avoid contact with people who have a fever or a cough, or seem to be unwell due to the flu. If you have no choice but to be close to those already infected, it is advised that you use a mask to cover your nose and mouth to limit the risk of infection.

Posted on : 03-09-2010 | By : admin | In : Health

Safe cleaning for Swine Flu is something we can all do to avoid catching the deadly strain of the H1N1 Swine Flu Virus now rippng through the US.

Practicing a clean home environment will help to prevent spreading of the flu virus this year.

Follow these cleaning tips below to prepare your home for this flu season.

Safe Cleaning for Swine flu Tip #1

Avoid using aerosol cleaners and aromatic room deodorizers around your home this flu season. Aerosol sprays contain particles that can trap and transmit the H1N1 virus as they do the fragrance particles contained within their chemical make up.

Safe Cleaning for Swine Flu Tip #2

Clean your carpets and furniture fabric more often during the flu season using an enzyme based cleaner. Enzyme fabric cleaners encapsulate dirt and stains and lifts them from your fabric. Along with bacteria.

Safe Cleaning for Swine Flu Tip #3

Wash hands before and after meal preparation and eating meals. Stress the importance of this to your school age child as the H1N1 virus hits school age children the hardest.

Safe Cleaning for Swine Flu Tip #4

Daily cleaning of your home is imperative to avoid catching the H1N1 virus this year. The virus likes warm indoor air and will cling to dirty surfaces imbedding itself in dirt molecules to wait for a new host.

Don’t let that host be you. Educate your children, family and co workers on the importance of keeping their surroundings clean, especially this flu season.

Tamiflu – An effective treatment for swine flu

Tamiflu is an oral antiviral drug that has been approved by the US FDA for the treatment and prevention of the swine flu virus. The new strain of the virus is resistant to most medicines and a probable cure in the form of a vaccine is yet to be developed. People who are hit by the swine flu virus must start taking Tamiflu after consulting with their doctor. Tamiflu is most effective if the treatment begins within 48 hours of developing the symptoms. People who are exposed to the swine flu virus may also take Tamiflu to prevent being affected.

What is swine flu?
Swine flu or swine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the influenza A virus. Though swine flu normally only infects pigs but the 2009 outbreak involves a new H1N1 type A influenza strain. It contains genes from pig, bird and human flu viruses. The swine flu virus originated in Mexico in March 2009 and within a few months it has affected thousands of people in several countries across the world. Because of it being spread worldwide, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the 2009 outbreak of the new H1N1 flu to be a global pandemic. Swine flu strains can spread fast because no one has natural immunity and so it is easy to catch and transmit the disease.

Swine flu symptoms
The symptoms of swine flu are similar to those reported in common flu. The severity of the symptoms depends on an individual’s resistance levels and on the treatment being provided. Some of the commonly reported symptoms of swine flu include -

Fever above 38ºC (100.4ºF) Cough Sore throat Body aches Chills Headache Fatigue Diarrhoea Nausea Vomiting

Symptoms of swine flu develop within 3 to 5 days after the victim is exposed to the virus. The symptoms continue for about 8 days, starting 1 day before the patient gets sick and continues until the patient has recovered. While some patients suffer mildly and recover within a week, in some patients the symptoms of swine flu may worsen, causing pneumonia and other chronic medical conditions. Thousands of people have died because of the aggravation of swine flu symptoms. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience headaches, fever or cold and if you develop symptoms after coming in contact with a person who has been exposed to the swine flu virus.

How does the swine flu virus spread?
Like common influenza, the swine flu virus may spread from person to person by coughing and sneezing by people who are already infected with the influenza virus. Healthy people may become infected by touching surfaces that are contaminated by the flu viruses and then touching their mouth, eyes or nose.

Swine flu prevention

Maintain hygiene Wash your hands frequently using soap or alcohol-based gel Cover you face while sneezing or coughing Stay away from crowds if possible. Stay home if you fall sick to avoid infecting others People who have or are suspected of having swine flu should wear a face mask

Swine flu treatment with Tamiflu
Tamiflu oseltamivir is an oral antiviral drug belonging to the class of medicines called neuraminidase inhibitors. The drug is found to be effective against both Influenza A and Influenza B virus. The US FDA has also approved Tamiflu for the prevention and treatment of the swine flu virus.

Influenza virus spreads because of a helper chemical on the surface of the virus called neuraminidase. This chemical enables the virus to spread to adjacent cells once it has entered the body. Tamiflu aims at attacking the virus so that it does not spread inside your body. The active ingredient in Tamiflu called oseltamivir binds to the neuraminidase on the surface of the virus particles and prevents it from working. By blocking the neuraminidase, Tamiflu confines the infection to a smaller area and prevents the virus from spreading inside your body. As a result, the symptoms and duration of swine flu are considerably reduced. Tamiflu works best when the treatment is initiated within 2 days of experiencing flu-like symptoms. Tamiflu oseltamivir has been shown to reduce the duration of the illness by approximately 1 day. Most importantly, the medicine helps to reduce the risk of developing flu-related complications, such as chest infections which may become severe and life threatening.

Tamiflu UK

Tamiflu oseltamivir is available to people in the UK who have been infected with the swine flu virus and to those who have been exposed to the virus. Tamiflu UK should only be used after consulting a doctor and after informing the doctor about your medical conditions, allergies and medicines you may be taking. You may also buy Tamiflu online in the UK from online clinics such as Healthexpress.co.uk. The website facilitates free consultation by a specialist doctor through an online consultation form. If the doctor finds Tamiflu suitable for you after reviewing your medical details, you will be sent a prescription for Tamiflu by email. Following this, your Tamiflu pills packet will reach your given address safely and promptly.

Information about Swine Flu virus

Swine flu is also known as the H1N1 flu and a number of other names such as swine influenza, hog flu, pig flu etc. The swine flu virus is a strain of the influenza family of viruses that is predominantly endemic in pigs. The swine flu virus is common all over the world; however the transfer of the virus from pigs to humans is not so common and does not necessarily cause human influenza. This usually leads to the production of antibodies in the human blood stream. When such a transmission does create human influenza, it is known as zoonotic swine flu. Those people who are exposed to pigs more than others stand a higher chance of getting infected by swine flu. However the meat of a pig will not carry any virus with it once it has been well cooked. Symptoms of zootonic swine flu in human beings are like the symptoms of normal influenza faced by humans. Chills, fever, sore throat, headaches, coughing, muscle and joint pains are bound to be experienced if you do not only suffer from influenza but also swine flu. Thus the latter becomes tougher to diagnose. The main causes for the swine flu are identified and research work is carryion on for producing immunity for this disease.

During 1918, swine flu was first said to be a disease related to human influenza and this was understood when pigs and human beings grew sick together. However the first identification of an influenza stemming from diseases in pigs did not occur till at least ten years later. For the 60 years that followed, swine flue strains were mostly H1N1. Later newer strains of three different subtypes and five different genotypes were found to be the cause of swine flu among pigs in North America. Latest strains that have emerged show strains from humans, pigs and birds and these together form the fast spreading swine flu virus that if detected too late, causes the life of the victim to grow fatal.

The H1N1 version of swine flu is one of the strains that caused the 1918 flu pandemic. The descendants of this virus have been circulating among humans throughout the 20th century. This has worsened the condition of the normal seasonal epidemics of influenza that normally affect humans. However it is rare that the virus might get transferred from pigs to humans directly and only 12 such cases have been found in America. However if that is to imply that swine flu is less likely to affect humans, do not live in denial as it does not take much to restore its pandemic state. Though the outbreak of swine flu in pigs are common and its rarely found in humans, or at least studies said so, it is shocking how things seemed to have changed and tables have been turned in the latest swine flu pandemic. Many are falling victim to swine flu and each has to be very responsible and even more careful.

What is the Difference Between Regular Flu and Swine Flu? Here is Lifesaving Information

Posted on : 28-08-2010 | By : admin | In : Health

With so much discussion about the H1N1 virus, or swine flu, you may be wondering what is the difference between regular flu and the swine flu.  This article should give you some easy to understand answers.

Regular flu is also referred to as seasonal flu. Generally it refers to influenza type A, B, or C, which is endemic to humans. Swine flu actually is a mutation of an animal strain that was transmitted to humans.  In this case, the strain originated with a pig, which is the H1N1 strain.  Other animal strains come from birds, and they are the H5N1 strains.  Scientists have traced the current pig strain to a farm near Vera Cruz,
Mexico.

Is it true that swine flu is more dangerous than regular flu?  Why?

It is believed that swine flu is more dangerous.  In the case of the current strain, no one in the world has been exposed to it before 2009.  Therefore no one has been able to build up an immunity to it.

That is the main reason the entire world is looking to a vaccine for protection.

Won’t your regular yearly flu shot protect you against swine flu?

It appears that it will not.

Is there a Difference between Swine Flu Vaccine and Seasonal Flu Vaccine?

Yes.  Swine flu vaccine is made up of the H1N1 virus.  Seasonal flu vaccines are generally a combination of the three most common flu viruses found in humans.

Are the symptoms between swine flu and regular flu different?

You probably would not know, at least at first, if you have seasonal or swine flu.  Coughing, sneezing, fever, chills, aches, fatigue – these all appear to be symptoms of both flus.

The largest concern about swine flu is its tendency to settle in the respiratory system and progress into pneumonia or other complications.

Are the folks with the highest risk factors with swine flu the same as regular flu?

Seasonal Flu is particularly dangerous for anyone with a weakened immune system, which generally includes the elderly. Younger people who are healthy normally are not bothered seriously by the side effects of seasonal flu.

There is a big change when it comes to swine flu.

CDC information states that the  H1N1 flu is likely more dangerous to people younger than 25 years of age.  People over 65 seem to have less of a chance to contract it.  It is believed they may have some immunity from exposure to similar (though not
identical) strains in the 1950s and 60s.

How will I know which flu I have?

You will need to have a lab test run.  Your doctor can take a simple swab test and you should know within a day or two.

Will the treatment differ between the two flus?

It appears most people will be treated about the same.  This includes bed rest and plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.  Some over the counter medications to relieve coughing and indigestion may be indicated.

Naturally, you will want to follow your doctor’s advice.  He or she will have the most up to date information.

Some doctors may prescribe antiviral drugs such as Relenza or Tamiflu.  These appear to have some effectiveness against the swine flu virus – particularly if they are taken as soon as the symptoms first appear.

If your child is sick they should be watched carefully to make certain they do not become dehydrated or develop difficulty breathing.  Consider it a danger sign if they appear overly lethargic or find breathing strained of hard.

Keep in touch with your pediatrician.  This is vitally important.

Why is swine flu considered more dangerous than regular flu?

It is possible that the swine flu could cause serious respiratory problems which could result in life threatning complications.  These will generally develop around the fifth or sixth day, when regular flu symptoms would be disappearing.

The World Health Organization, in April, 2009, raised the warning level to Level 5, thus
instructing governments to immediately prepare for a global pandemic.  Infections have already been reported around the world, particularly in the Western Hemisphere and the United States.

Past history suggests these strains appear to die out during the summer months but roar back with greater ferocity in the fall and winter.

It is important for each family to have an individual action plan.

Fortunately, inside vast majority of conditions in which an person has the H1N1 virus or swine epidemic, no medical cure is essential and normally only over-the-counter medications are employed to treat the signs and symptoms. Folks who are nutritious and have an immune program that may be functioning generally typically tend not to should make a medical doctors appointment, even so, people that are going through severe flu-like signs and symptoms, or suffer from other healthcare ailments including continual illnesses, respiratory difficulties, or are pregnant, ought to find a health evaluation the moment possible. In some situations when the symptoms of H1N1 turn out to be extreme, disaster health care treatment is required as it can be a existence threatening situation.

Disaster Warning symptoms in Young children

Youngsters below the age of 5 are susceptible to considerable difficulties from H1N1 or any type of seasonal epidemic; as a result, health suggestions ought to be obtained at the first indication of any flu-like indicators inside a child of this age. If your baby is going through any with the following warning signs that may well be problems from H1N1 or a seasonal flu virus you need to obtain disaster medical awareness:

Issues breathing or rapid breathing.

If the skin appears to become a bluish color.

If they are unable to wake up, seem disoriented, or aren’t interacting.

When they aren’t consuming adequate fluids.

When they are displaying irritability on the point where they can’t be comforted or tend not to want for being held.

A fever that may be accompanied by a rash.

If they have in recent times started to acquire more than the flu virus along with the indicators return which has a fever and coughing that seems being even worse.

Urgent Warning indications in Adults

Most adult individuals who create a seasonal swine flu or the H1N1 virus do not have to attain health care treatment; on the other hand, if you do are available down which has a situation from the swine flu you ought to stay at household and steer clear of get in touch with with other persons for a minimum of a period of twenty four hours. Adult folks who are at a large possibility for issues from the flu virus ought to look for assistance from their main proper care physician. These folks incorporate anyone who’s sixty 5 many years of age or older, have other persistent health problems, or ladies who are pregnant. Disaster health interest ought to be obtained when you practical knowledge any with the using symptoms:

Shortness of breath or trouble breathing.

Vomiting that may be extreme or persistent.

Dizziness or confusion.

Feelings of pressure or discomfort inside region on the abdomen or chest

If you’ve not long ago started to obtain above the flu virus plus the signs return which has a fever and coughing that seems to become even worse.

Should you will not be enduring any on the above h1n1 symptoms but have flu-like symptoms that happen to be concerning you or you suspect that you simply may perhaps have are available in make contact with with a person who may be diagnosed using the H1N1 virus, then you definitely should consult together with your main health care physician or other well being care provider.

Evidence emerges that seasonal flu vaccine increases risk of H1N1 swine flu

0

Posted on : 24-08-2010 | By : admin | In : Health

(NaturalNews) To hear it from the vaccine makers, their vaccines are perfectly safe and have no side effects. A person can receive an unlimited number of vaccines (10, 100 or even 1000) and have absolutely no ill effects, they claim. This is the quack science mythology upon which mass vaccination policies are currently based. But new evidence is emerging that people receiving a seasonal flu shot are made more susceptible to H1N1 swine flu as a result.

CBC News in Canada is now reporting disturbing findings you need to know about: “Four Canadian studies involved about 2,000 people, health officials told CBC News. Researchers found people who had received the seasonal flu vaccine in the past were more likely to get sick with the virus.”

The story doesn’t cite the percentage increase in H1N1 virus risk, but it’s apparently enough to give pause to many doctors and infectious disease experts. “We don’t know with this year’s flu shot how it interacts with the pandemic flu shot, so it’s a worry,” said Dr. Michael Gardam in the CBC News article quoted below. He’s the director of infectious diseases prevention and control at the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion.

The upshot of all this is that Canadian health officials are now scratching their heads, wondering whether the seasonal flu vaccines will actually make the H1N1 pandemic worse!

It’s fascinating that this data is coming out of Canada, not the U.S. In the United States, the mainstream media has engaged in a virtual blackout of any information that questions the safety of vaccines, even while openly pushing outrageous lies about the swine flu vaccine (http://www.naturalnews.com/027055_swine_flu_vaccines_swine_flu_vaccine.html).
Vaccines weaken your immune system

What this information reveals is further evidence that flu shots damage or weaken your immune system, making you more susceptible to subsequent infections. Flu shots don’t even work to reduce your risk of getting the flu that they’re targeting! Most people who get the flu are the very same people who routinely receive flu shots.

This will hold true with H1N1 swine flu as well: The people getting the swine flu virus will be primarily those who routinely receive flu vaccinations.

You know why? Because a flu shot trains your immune system to be lazy. It exposes your immune technology to an artificially weakened virus, resulting in a lazy adaptive response from your immune technology. In much the same way that your leg muscles atrophy if you stop walking, your immune system begins to weaken if you don’t exercise it. And this leads to an increased risk of being unable to defend against future exposure to infectious disease, which is exactly what we’re seeing with this Canadian study.

Vaccines are the quackery of modern medicine. They not only don’t work to protect people from the diseases they target; they also increase the risk of being infected with other diseases. And that doesn’t even include the ways in which vaccine ingredients (adjuvants or preservatives) can cause permanent damage to your nervous system.

If vaccines strengthen the immune system (as vaccine makers imply), then why do people who take such vaccines end up at higher risk of future infections? The only rational explanation for this is that vaccines compromise immune function. And if that’s true, then why should anyone take them in the first place?
Vitamin D makes flu shot vaccines obsolete

We could do away with vaccines almost entirely by giving people vitamin D supplements instead. Seasonal flu is no match for healthy levels of vitamin D in the blood, and with the addition of a few immune-supporting nutrients (like vitamin C, zinc, and omega-3 oils), the days of people getting sick from the seasonal flu would be all but over.

People who have adequate levels of vitamin D in their blood rarely get sick from seasonal flu. The flu primarily strikes those who are nutritionally deficient in one or more key immune system nutrients.

But rather than teach patients how to correct those deficiencies, the entire industry of western medicine would much rather poke a hole in your arm, inject you with chemicals, charge you forty bucks and keep you in the dark about the nutrients that would have protected you better in the first place. That’s modern medicine for you: Consumer ignorance plus chemical intervention. It’s a great recipe for making money, but it’s a terrible recipe for protecting public health.

That’s why I say just say no to ALL vaccines. They harm you far more than they help, and they’re based on the most absurd medical quackery you can imagine. As is common throughout the pharmaceutical industry, most of the “evidence” supporting the efficacy of vaccines was fabricated by drug companies. There is absolutely no evidence anywhere in the world that says vaccines protect you from seasonal flu better than vitamin D and immune-boosting nutrients. There’s not even any trustworthy evidence that seasonal flu shots reduce your long-term risk of being infected with the flu.

But now there is evidence that receiving a seasonal flu shot may increase your risk of contracting H1N1 swine flu, and that’s something to carefully consider if you value your health (or your life).

Why Your Swine Flu Vaccine Isn’t Here, Plus Common Sense Tips From The Healthcare Consumer

Posted on : 20-08-2010 | By : admin | In : Health

While much has been written about the H1N1 “swine flu”, we think some concise information is worth providing.

Flu activity is widespread- it has essentially affected residents of every state. The H1N1 strain of flu virus is turning out to be the perfect storm of illnesses because for certain high-risk groups of people it can be fatal, many are not taking it seriously, there are serious shortages of vaccine and government at all levels is not doing an effective job of managing distribution of the limited amounts of vaccine that are available.

If you’re a resident of Connecticut as we are, the data will be particularly important.

As of the end of last month, there have been about 3,000 laboratory-documented cases of H1N1 in Connecticut, but since most people with flu symptoms don’t seek medical care, we suspect the number of cases is much higher. About 350 of those cases included hospitalization. On the vaccine availability end of things, as recently as the end of last month, Connecticut was receiving only about 25% of the doses it ordered.

National vaccine allocations are done based on population distribution by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) – the states with greater populations will receive larger numbers of doses. But nationally, all dose shipments are falling far short of needs.

Naturally, our Federal Government is pointing fingers at itself, saying that its performance is unsatisfactory and that the entire supply chain needs to be overhauled before the next breakout. Well, thanks for that helpful information, is all we can say. We’ll be sure to file it in the same folder we keep our New Orleans / Hurricane Katrina archives in.

Once the vaccine allocation amounts are indicated by the government, vaccines must be distributed.

The vaccine does not travel directly from the manufacturer to your private doctor or clinic. A distributor is involved in the process; often a large pharmaceutical or medical products company. These distributors provide a means for the medical community to order and pay for vaccines and related medical supplies.

An interesting insider fact is that these companies make the final decision about which customers receive all or part of the vaccine ordered. While the standard practice is to use a lottery system to distribute vaccine to customers, lucrative accounts may receive preferential treatment or “first fill” status. This helps shed light on why your local physician may not have any flu vaccine while another clinic or physician practice does.

First, some facts:

Swine flu, aka H1N1 cannot be contracted by eating pork. The renowned World Health Organization has said that swine flu is not transmissible to people via properly prepared pork products.

H1N1 is not “just the flu”. In contrast to run-of-the-mill flu viruses, the H1N1 has the ability to infect cells deep in the lungs where it can cause pneumonia. What makes it so deadly is that onset of the infection can occur so quickly that it becomes out of control before treatment is sought. Seasonal flu viruses typically infect only the cells in the upper respiratory system and the body is much more able to defend itself against them.

The vaccine is safe. While this vaccine was produced in an amazingly short time, results indicate that it’s very safe- certainly safer than doing without if you’re in one of the high-risk groups. Those groups are young children and the people who care for them, pregnant women, all people ages 6 months – 24 years all others with existing medical conditions.

One last thing about the vaccine safety in general: there’s a scary trend, supported by several media personalities that encourages parents not to get their children vaccinated because of a misguided concern over the safety of the vaccines.

The Healthcare Consumer’s position is that this is an unfortunate and dangerous trend, both at the individual level as well as at the societal level. Although you might think the safest thing to do would be to lock our children up and never allow them to be exposed to the outside world, that’s not practical. In fact, kids need to be exposed to germs in order to develop healthy immune systems. So, instead, we assess risk and then make a decision.

By definition, vaccines aren’t 100% safe; but they’re darn close. To skip vaccinations is to potentially reintroduce diphtheria, pertussis, measles, polio and other horrific diseases back into a society which had effectively eradicated them.  If you’re concerned about vaccination, we recommend the information provided by the CDC here.

Receiving the vaccine does not guarantee that you can’t get H1N1. But it does dramatically reduce the chances. This is actually true of all vaccines. The point behind vaccines is to stimulate the body’s own immune system to produce enough antibodies to protect against infection. In actuality, everybody responds differently and some may take weeks to develop immunity.

Washing your hands doesn’t kill the H1N1 virus. …But, hand washing is still the best way to prevent transmission of most germs including the flu. The focus here is on “transmission”.

When you wash your hands you are reducing the number of germs through friction, exposure to soap and water and by rinsing. If you have few germs on your hands, you’ll transfer less to another person, object, or even to your own eyes, mouth or nose. So don’t stop washing! Here’s something to think about when you shake someone’s hand: According to the American Society for Microbiology, one in five people don’t wash their hands after using the restroom.

Resources and things you can do

Your state health department will have the most up-to-date information about H1N1.

In Connecticut, the main points of contact are:

* The Connecticut Department of Public Health who handles allocation of all H1N1 vaccine supply that comes into the state and can provide some additional information via phone (800) 830-9426 and via their website.
* The health department operated by the town you live in who coordinates flu clinics when vaccine is available.
*   Your primary care physician who can tell you if you’re in one of higher risk groups and who may also receive vaccine doses.
*    While many of the drugstore chains offer flu vaccinations we’re not aware of any who are providing H1N1 and we believe they won’t have the vaccine for the foreseeable future.
*    If you supervise people at work, be aware that many employees with flu symptoms will not take time from work for fear of placing their job in jeopardy or as is often the case, because they won’t be paid for the time off.
*   We hope you’ll be clear in your communications that a) sick people get better and can be productive again faster when they’re at home resting and b) a so-called “dedicated employee” who comes to work while they’re sick with the flu and transmits the virus to their coworkers has not done you any favors.
* Get a regular flu shot. They’re effective, present little risk and who wants to be laid up for a week with any illness?
* Be persistent with your government representatives. If you feel as we do, that your government has failed you by not doing as good of a job as they should have in anticipating this and then doing a mediocre job of distributing the vaccines, let them know. Sometimes it’s easy to forget, but they work for us, not the other way around.

In Mexico in April this year, a never-before heard strain of swine flu emerge, turning ill more than a thousand Mexicans and causing the death of 68. Swine flu has spread to other parts of the world such as the US and New Zealand when affected individuals (Mexicans or tourists to Mexico), traveled to those places. Swine flu has spread so far and wide that the World Health Organization fears it will bring about the next pandemic.

This is not the first time the world is threatened by swine flu. Swine flu, which is also referred to as pigfluenza, hog flu, pig flu, or swine influenza, typically affects pigs only. In 1918, an H1N1 virus caused flu pandemic in humans. Scientists speculated that H1N1 was created either when human influenza virus crossed specie boundary and affected pigs, or the other way around.

In 1930, a study confirmed that influenza virus caused the illnesses of pigs; the viral strain was identified as H1N1. Other past outbreaks in humans include the 1976 US outbreak (number of deaths: 5) and the 1988 Wisconsin outbreak (number of deaths: 1).

2009 Swine Flu Outbreak
.
The strain that caused the swine outbreak in 2009, on the other hand, is different from other types of swine flu viruses before. It infects humans only. Pigs show no sign of infection. As such, scientists are having a difficult time establishing the origins of this new disease. The 2009 swine flu outbreak is caused by a strain that combines a single strain of human flu virus, a single strain of avian or bird flu virus, and two strains of swine flu virus.

Transmission

Swine flu virus in pig is transmitted when uninfected animals touch the nose or dried mucus of the infected pig.

Transmission of swine flu from pigs to humans occurs when a person touches an infected pig such as during animal transport or cleaning of pig pens. Swine flu is not acquired by eating pork.

Transmission of swine flu from human to human occurs when airborne viruses (brought about by sneezing and coughing) are inhaled by another person. Touching of contaminated surfaces and bringing one’s hand to one’s nose or mouth.

Symptoms

Symptoms of swine flu in humans are non-specific. They are quite similar to other types of influenza such as common flu and bird flu. People infected with swine flu often the following:

• fever
• chills
• coughing and sneezing
• sore throat
• muscle pain
• discomfort
• fatigue
• vomiting
• diarrhea

In pigs, swine influenza virus cause:

• fever
• lethargy
• decrease in appetite
• abortion
• sneezing
• coughing
• weight loss
• poor growth
• difficulty breathing.

Because swine flu symptoms are non-specific, a laboratory taste of nose or throat swab is needed to confirm viral presence.

How to Prevent Spread of Swine Flu

Among swine: owners should implement facility management and management. Vaccinating the pigs may also help reduce the chances of spreading of the flu.

To prevent transmission of swine flu from pigs to humans, farmers, veterinarians, and other people who come in close contact with live pigs should wear masks and gloves when working with infected pigs.

To prevent spread of swine flu among humans, the following steps are recommended or used in some countries:

• Persons with flu should be quarantined immediately
• Sick people should sneeze on tissue paper, dispose the use properly, and wash their hands.
• People who traveled to Mexico and who are family members of infected persons should be vaccinated with zanamivir or oseltamivir.
• Avoiding contact with sick people and with live pigs
• Many countries including Russia and France issued advise against traveling to Mexico.
• Always wash hands properly.

At the moment, only Tamiflu and Relenza seem to work against swine flu. Many countries have a supply of these vaccines, though not enough to curb a pandemic if the current swine flu reaches that level.
